About the doula profession
The doula's services are strictly non-medical. The support offered to parents and families strictly respects the monopolies of the professions regulated by the public health code, in particular that of midwives and doctors.
Consequently, the doula is not involved in any decisions concerning the medical management of pregnancy. She has no authority to make diagnoses or prescriptions for therapeutic purposes. She never intervenes in the parents' choices, particularly on medical issues. Her role is not to guide their decisions on matters that do not fall within her competence. Nor is the doula competent to judge when a woman should go to the maternity hospital for her delivery. On this point, parents must follow the advice given to them by their midwife, doctor or maternity hospital. The doula's support is not a substitute for the recommended medical monitoring of pregnancy or birth, which must be carried out by competent health professionals.
The doula may refuse to be present if the parents ultimately decide not to undergo medical supervision, as this could incur her liability.
